College Kiddo

College Kiddo

An Exciting New Phase

Oldest Kiddo is headed back to her Sophomore year of college. I just dropped her off on Saturday at her apartment with roomies. It’s a surreal concept, this child-rearing stuff. You give so much time and resource and effort, and if you succeed, they leave and become successful, well-adjusted humans in the world.

My imaginings of how she is on campus

Last year was a bit harder saying goodbye, we hadn’t successfully done it yet. This year it was still hard, but I felt calmer and she was confident and excited to be back on campus, around friends, work and the routine of beginning classes.

I’ve loved the transition and embodying my role as a trusted advisor when asked, and less of an authority figure - although I’m not sure my kiddos ever really thought that about me in the first place. The intellectual conversations, debates and ideas we can inspire with and from each other.

She has the most incredible hair, and it’s often a version of a rainbow.

In many ways it’s been weird for me how weird it hasn’t been. I think part of the reason for this is B has always been very independent, and pandemic life kept her home much more than any of us could have anticipated. It was actually a great bonding time for our family and there are many moments that I really treasure even in the darkest and more uncertain times of COVID. Now, however, to see her be able to fully spread her wings, find her people, try, fail, try again. It’s downright magical.

The delight in seeing her transition, begin to create her own life, connections, and experiences has been awesome, far outweighing my sadness.

What I’m thinking about today : As fall begins to sneak in around the edges, I’m torn between knitting, painting and writing. Balance is key. Truly not a strong suit of mine. Thanks neuro-divergent brain.

Favorite link of today: I’ve mentioned before, B started a business just before her freshman year of High School. She’s an incredibly talented artist. If you are interested in seeing more of her work. This is the best place to start.

Read this BookGirl Power: A Coloring + Activity Book Celebrating Women Paperback by Kaytee Crawford a dear friend of the family, mentor to my kiddos and amazing birthing Doula.

This beautiful song, I am my Mother’s Savage Daughter by k. l. kahan as Wyndreth has been in my head since dropping her off.

Another lovely rendition is here.
